Addiction to opiates is becoming much more popular in the United States. In fact, President Obama felt as if it was necessary to mention the problem in his last State of the Union address on Tuesday. During the speech, Obama begged to Congress that “[they] can work together this year on some bipartisan priorities like criminal justice reform and helping people who are battling prescription drug abuse and heroin abuse.”
Federal lawmakers in the United States worry that opiate trends are going to continue pushing tens of thousands of people annually to their early deaths due to the fact that national agencies that are supposed to be managing this epidemic are being covered by the same industries that they are supposed to be restricting.
There was once a conspiracy theory that stated that the federal government was being run by alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical companies, but it has now become apparent that the reason the addiction epidemic in the United States is becoming worse is because of the strength of Big Pharma. Big Pharma’s influence on officials with agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has led to dangerous drugs such as OxyContin for children to be legalized. Still, although these dangerous drugs are being allowed, not even non-intoxicating forms of marijuana are enemies of the state.
In 2015, President Obama suggested that Dr. Robert Califf would become the deputy commissioner of the FDA. By September, Califf was nominated by Obama to manage total operations of the entire agency. This would have put him one step closer to having control of food, drugs, tobacco and other consumables in the United States. Yet during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, several lawmakers criticized Califf over his connections with various drug companies.
