In 2013, medical marijuana became legal in Illinois. Despite this, although it almost the end of 2015, no patients have been able to actually buy the medical marijuana. Not only are patients prohibited from growing their own marijuana, but they are only allowed to buy from a licensed dispensary; okay why don’t they just buy it? Because not a single licensed dispensary has opened for business yet. A statistic noted that there are around 3,000 medical marijuana patients in Illinois; which is a large amount of people to be affected negatively because of a lack of medicinal marijuana dispensaries.

Despite the report of only 3,000 people, one can assume that there are many more. Those other people have not signed up yet because there is no point if they cannot implement their status. Also, the conditions to become a medical marijuana patient are extremely slim. Illinois’ Governor did not condone of the idea that more conditions should be added to the qualifications when it was brought up. Per the Chicago Tribune:

“Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday continued his chilly reception of the medical marijuana program he inherited, vetoing a measure that would have allowed patients with post-traumatic stress disorder to qualify for medical marijuana as his administration revealed it would not expand the trial program to include 11 new ailments.

In his veto message, the Republican governor said the medical marijuana test program is still in its early stages and it would be premature to expand the scope ‘before we have had the chance to evaluate it.’”

Here are a list of conditions that would be added to the qualifications to become a medical marijuana patient: “Migraines, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Chronic Pain (Post-Operative), Anorexia Nervosa, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Peripheral and diabetic neuropathy, Osteoarthritis, Polycystic kidney disease, Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome, Neuro-Behcet’s Autoimmune Disease.” However, it does not look like it’s going to happen. Patients that suffer from those conditions have no choice but to hope that Governor Rauner will change his opinion, or that he leaves office sooner than later.
