At the moment, twenty-five states in the U.S. have legalized medical marijuana, and some of those have even legalized recreational marijuana. The Drug Enforcement Administration seems ready to loosen up on some of the restrictions limiting the marijuana industry. At the very least, it seems that they are ready to allow researchers to look into the health benefits of pot. While some are surprised, others are simply wondering what took them so long to do this. The answer will probably include Big Pharma.

Big Pharma is the name that theoretically consists of the world’s pharmaceutical industry as well as its trade group, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. DrugWatch states that Big Pharma funds the agency that regulates drug, also known as the Food and Drug Administration. In addition, it spends more lobbying in the District of Columbia than any other industry and accounts for nearly sixty percent of biomedical research in the United States.

“Using these connections to pursue industry goals, Big Pharma has a significant competitive advantage over the public interest,” DrugWatch’s page says.

Also, they are not interested in cannabis tearing into their profits. One of the largest reasons that states have passed a lot of medical marijuana initiatives is that there is an opioid problem that is increasing, apparently. According to about half of Congress, the opioid addiction problem in the United States can be deemed a national emergency. However, at the moment, opioids are the only drugs that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for pain reduction. There are no exact numbers available, however, most people believe that Big Pharma is making a good amount of money distributing opioids. A new survey published by the Centre for Addictions Research in British Columbia helped confirm that there is a ton of money being made with opioids and that it is a problem.
