Legislation supporting the use of cannabis oil for therapeutic medical treatments was approved by the Virginia Senate with full support on Tuesday and is now heading to the desk of Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The piece opens an opportunity for medical cannabis treatment, specifically for the younger suffering from extreme forms of epilepsy. Taking certain oils found in cannabis plants lowers the intoxicating effects while including properties that can help stop seizures, according to The Washington Post.
“I think they’re opening up to medical marijuana as a whole,” Beth Collins, a mother from Fairfax reported to the Daily Press.
Collins and many parents state that the oil is the only solution to reducing the number of epileptic seizures their parents need to deal with.
Parents of those that deal with severe conditions began crying tears of joy in the Senate chambers as the bill “passed its last legislative test before being sent to the governor for final approval.” State support for medical cannabis treatments will make many parents happy who have been looking for cannabis oils for their children to try to make their lives a bit easier.
The legislative would protect parents from incarceration for possession of cannabidiol oil, or CBD, which is known for “mimicking the anxiety-reducing effects of anti-seizure prescription medications such as Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin.” Also, it would protect people from not having THC-A oil, a non-psychoactive compound seen in cannabis plants.
The parents of those with bad epilepsy have even broken the law to get the medical oils for their children. Many have gone all the way to Colorado and illegally taken the oils to other states. Some legal dispensaries in some states will transport oils, but that is a violation of federal law. The bill, which was first passed by the General Assembly in 2015, with the goal of protecting parents from legal penalties for possession.
