Marijuana as we know it has great medical benefits for many illnesses and diseases. This past Wednesday a board of physicians suggested putting Lou Gehrig’s disease and ulcerative colitis on the already existing list of medical conditions that a person would need to be considered eligible to use marijuana for medical purposes

A vote that was held by The Medical Marijuana Program Board of Physician was a 3-1 decision that recommended adding ALS which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease as well as ulcerative colitis, however they split 2-2 on including Fabry disease.

Doctors, Deepak Cyril D’Souza and Godfrey D. Pearlson were opposed to adding Fabry disease to the list, while Jonathan A. Kost and Vincent R. Carlesi voted to include it in the marijuana program. D’Souza was the dissenting vote on involving ALS and ulcerative colitis. Their recommendations will be looked over by Consumer Protection Commissioner Jonathan A. Harris.

“The commissioner may choose to accept or reject any or all of the board’s recommendations with regard to choosing to promulgate a regulation to add any condition,” stated the State Department of Consumer Protection spokeswoman Claudette Carveth.

If the medical marijuana program is sought out to be amended it will be subject to a process that involves a hearing, public comments, and a vote by the General Assembly’s Regulation Review Committee, as well as a review by  the Attorney General.

With many benefits to using marijuana for medical purposes, it’s nice to see the efforts to add more illnesses and diseases to a list where cannabis can be of service as an option for treatment.
