The U.S. Postal Service has cautioned others that it would be a felony to mail any material that advertises marijuana. The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Associations was forced to relay this message to its around a hundred members earlier this week. The group’s executive director stated that the association “strongly discourages” newspapers in Oregon that use the U.S. Postal Service for delivery from allowing “any type of marijuana advertising.”
“It is against the law,” Laurie Hieb wrote in an email to Oregon newspaper executives. “Unfortunately, ONPA cannot do anything about this.”
It’s not certain what brought about the warning, which was delivered on Monday by a Washington postal official to the Chinook Observer, a Long Beach, Washington, newspaper. The newspaper, as well as the Daily Astorian, gives out a weekly tab by the name of “Coast Weekend,” which runs advertisements from sundry dispensaries around the state.
The Long Beach paper circulates 4,400 papers on average. Around 2,560 subscribers get the newspapers through United States mail, Steve Forrester, president of the EO Media Group, stated. EO Media Group publishes eleven newspapers, including those in Long View and Astoria. Also, he is the publisher and editor of the Daily Astorian.
According to Forrester, he reached out to U.S. Senator, Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, to hear more about the federal warning. He stated that he is currently waiting for more information to come in before making a decision about marijuana ads.
“We haven’t set a long-term strategy,” Forrester said. “We can’t until we know more.”
