According to Justin Trudeau, a liberal government would work to legalize and regulate marijuana instantly.

“The Liberal Party is committed to legalizing and regulating marijuana,” Trudeau responded to a reporter’s question in Surrey on Wednesday.

Trudeau refused to confirm a timetable for marijuana reform, however, he made it apparent that it would be of the largest priorities if he was elected on October 19th. According to the leader of the Liberal Party, legalizing cannabis would fix a “failed system” and get rid of “the criminal element” associated with it. He then went on to blame Stephen Harper, Conservative Leader, of his anti-marijuana policies that promote criminality.

“It is our intention to stop Mr. Harper’s failed approach on marijuana,” Trudeau stated.

He also added that legalization could occur within a month or within a couple of years with a Liberal government, yet no matter what the time, he would ensure that the process would happen as soon as he would take power. One concern raised when the Liberal Party released a casting platform without the inclusion of marijuana regulation. This was addressed on Wednesday, as he was trying to decide the best way to regulate it in Canada.

“We believe in being responsible and realistic in the costing of our plans,” Trudeau stated. “We didn’t book for tax revenues for marijuana because we don’t yet know what rate we’re going to be taxing it.”

Trudeau has been a supporter of loosening marijuana laws for a long time now, but only now has he begun to address it.
