Once against the legalization of marijuana despite its benefits, the Federal Agency is looking to perform more.

Many advocators of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes have been detailing their support for more research on cannabis. Most of this research is geared to the therapeutic value found in the plant’s cannabidiol (CBD).

“There is reason to believe (cannabidiol) may have a range of uses in medicine, including in the treatment of seizures and other neurological disorders,” says Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “In the impassioned, often emotional debates these days over medical marijuana, CBD is often cited as one of the main reasons restrictions on marijuana should be loosened.”

There is not too much research on CBD to base results on, at least, not as much as one would like when releasing information. However, despite the lack of CBD information, some things are certain: it is extremely effective against certain disorders such as epilepsy and a condition by the name of “Multiple Sclerosis.” Recent breakthroughs have also shown that CBD expedites the recovery of fractured bones.

Volkow is calling for more research on CBD soon so that patients awaiting do not have to suffer much longer without any beneficial results.

“Much more research needs to be done, but it should be done quickly,” says Nora Volkow. “Parents can’t wait — their children are growing; their children’s brains are actively developing, and the repeated seizures may be damaging this growth. Parents currently must navigate states’ medical marijuana laws or defy the law to obtain CBD extracts — which, in the current unregulated market, may be of questionable quality and content.”
