A developing bill to allow medical marijuana shops in Michigan could also provide a regulatory outline for full legalization of marijuana, according to the sponsor. State Rep. Mike Callton, R- Nashville, has been dedicating his efforts towards medical marijuana legislation for quite some time a version passed the Michigan House by a wide spread back in 2013 before stalling in the Senate yet recent talk has led to major changes in the bill.
“I think we’ve gotten more buy-in from the police groups because it looks like we need some regulation of marijuana in place before a possible legalization referendum,” Callton stated.
“If we don’t have anything in place, and suddenly it’s legal, it’s going to be the wild wild west. It’s going to be hard to shove Pandora back in the box.”
Callton is looking to allow larger marijuana cultivation operations and medical sales through “provisioning centers” The operation would run parallel to rather than substitute Michigan’s voters approved medical law that gives certified marijuana users and caregivers to harvest a limited amount of plants.
The law set back in 2008 did not discuss marijuana shops, and a 2013 state Supreme Court ruling empowered county prosecutors to shut them for being a public annoyance. Some compounds continue to run their business at the discretion of local law enforcement.
