The benefit of cannabis for children suffering from autism and related conditions is objectively one of the best treatments for the disease. Several children are a part of new clinical trials with the goal of finding breakthrough treatments using the compounds within cannabis, such as CBD and THC.
There is a large amount of evidence that the main non-psychoactive component of cannabis, CBD, can help children in ways that no other medicine is able to. The stories of how the compound has saved the lives of those suffering from seizures and autism is uncanny, but more research still needs to be done in the subject.
One of the pioneering places where research is taking place is in Israel. The country has been pioneering research to help aid the side effects of many conditions since 1992, when they permitted the use of medical marijuana on a nationwide level. Israel is also only one of three countries in the world with a nationally sponsored medical marijuana program alongside Canada and the Netherlands. Research being done in this location is much cheaper as well when compared to places like the United States due to the availability of the industry.
With autism being labeled as one of the fastest growing developmental disorders, affecting one in 68 children, it seems obvious that scientists would be working on a treatment for the condition. As far as the U.S. goes, only two medications that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of autism. Both of these drugs are antipsychotic drugs that do not have a high success rate for treating autism. Often, these drugs can end up harming the children and making them feel out of it most of the time. One parent of a child diagnosed with autism has stated that when her daughter took the prescribed medicine, it “turned her into a zombie. She would just sit there with her mouth wide open, not moving.” The child is part of an ongoing study that involved around 120 children, which will last throughout the end of 2018.
The primary doctor in the study has stated that many of the patients in the study have taken these antipsychotics with around half responding negatively. This is a very low success rate and it appears that there has to be a better treatment. The doctor stated that, “many parents were asking for cannabis for their kids. First I said no, there’s no data to support cannabis for autism so we can’t give it to you.”
His opinion changed drastically around a year later, seeing how heavily cannabis could affect children with epilepsy and autism. Epilepsy is a side effect of autism that affects around 30% of those diagnosed as autistic. The study stated that “After seeing positive results in 70 of his autistic patients in an observational study, Aran said, “OK we need to do a clinical trial so there will be data.”
The parents of the children involved in the study are incredibly thankful to see the changes in their children when using cannabis. Many parents have claimed that the use of cannabis is a miracle for their children’s conditions, and that they don’t know what they would do without it. The only impediment to the furthering of cannabis being a treatment is the amount of research being done. As more research is done throughout the industry, the hopes are high that drugs will be able to be produced allowing children to reach their full potential. Only time will tell how well the development of these drugs helps those with autism and related conditions.
