The effort to legalize cannabis in the United States has been very hectic recently. For instance, in Washington D.C., legislatures put a block on various cannabis-related measures, including one that would have allowed veterans to obtain medical cannabis. However, it wasn’t all bad. The biggest problem with marijuana has been the lack of research. Because marijuana is a Schedule I drug, it is still considered illegal by the federal government and is deemed to have “no medical benefits.” However, recently, some congressmen introduced a cannabis research bill.

Congressional legislatures proposed a bill recently that would change the federal government’s policy on researching cannabis. The bill is called the “Medical Marijuana Research Act of 2016,” and has been made to get rid of the barriers that have halted the scientific community from looking at the therapeutic benefits of the marijuana plant for quite some time now. When it comes down to it, the measure will make the federal government allow more cultivators than just the University of Mississippi to supply research cannabis. It would also get rid of the barriers involved in the application process and have the Justice Department approve every study so long as it is in the interest of the American public. Versions of the measure were sent into both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.

“Despite the fact that over 200 million Americans now have legal access to some form of medical marijuana, federal policy is blocking science. It’s outrageous,” Representative Earl Blumenauer, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, said. “We owe it to patients and their families to allow for the research physicians need to understand marijuana’s benefits and risks and determine proper use and dosage. The federal government should get out of the way to allow for this long overdue research.”
