In the world of modern medicine, medical marijuana has been used to help treat and alleviate symptoms due to severe illnesses and diseases. However, the federal government has not viewed cannabis as having any medicinal value until now.
Recently, the federal government has acknowledged from current research that medical marijuana can reduce aggressive forms of tumors while utilizing radiation treatment. At the same time further supporting what most marijuana activists have stated from the beginning, about the medical advantages marijuana provides.
With the federal government currently cultivating a small supply of cannabis on a Mississippi based campus via The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), where a research team is working on the negative side effects verses the positives of cannabis to better understand how utilize it s medicinal properties more efficiently.
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the marijuana plant as medicine,” the FDA states. “However, scientific study of the chemicals in marijuana, called cannabinoids, has led to two FDA-approved medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form. Continued research may lead to more medications.” the FDA also stated.
From reading this we can only assume, that with the federal government paying mind to the fact that marijuana does have a certain medicinal value, this acknowledgment by the federal government can only lead to further progression as more states fight to legalize medical marijuana.
