The next time you jump into a vehicle from ride-hailing service Sidecar your co-passenger might be a bag of marijuana.
The Sidecar service will deliver medicinal cannabis alongside its typical business of servicing paying passengers with transpiration around town, initiating this business in San Francisco. The company has teamed up with on-demand cannabis startup Meadow to further grow its delivery fleet during times of high demand.
Sidecar, a smaller competitor to Uber and Lyft, made a major transition back in February when it announced its drivers would begin carrying same day deliveries like retail purchases or food while also transporting passengers. Sunil Paul Ceo of Sidecar called it the start of regular drivers becoming “hyper-efficient logistic experts.”
However, Meadow was trying to expand its on-demand cannabis service but running into some obstacles. Because of restrictions on who can transport cannabis, marijuana shops employ their own drivers directly, and those were the ones that were available to deliver orders that came through Meadow
“Some of the dispensaries needed more drivers to help scale and reach more patients, and we also found some dispensaries didn’t have drivers at all,” stated cofounder David Hua. “The Sidecar partnership made a lot of sense.”
Paul stated he is in great belief the Meadow partnership will prove that Sidecar is capable of delivering anything, even controlled substances that need extra security.
