The Puyallup Tribe of Indians have made history recently; the tribe signed a breakthrough cannabis compact with state Governor Jay Inslee and the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board to look at the testing of recreational and medical marijuana products at the Tribe’s Laboratory, Medicine Creek Analytics. This is the first Native American tribal marijuana lab in the country and was made possible by House Bill 2000, which was set during the legislative session in 2015.
Under the compact, Medicine Creek Analytics will give accurate testing to state I-502 suppliers, processors, medical cannabis cultivators, and other Indian tribes working with marijuana. The lab will also look at marijuana research with the University of Washington. The lab has state-of-the-art technology and a qualified science team being led by Scientific Director Aaron Stancik, who has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Idaho.
Kyle Shelton, a Lab Assistant, used to be an employee of PhytaLab, a renowned marijuana testing lab in Idaho and is a pesticides chemist with years of experience in similar industries. Dr. Jeremy Riggle is a professor at Eastern Oregon University and leads his own laboratory in the state.
“Medicine Creek Analytics has the best science team in the industry,” Stancik stated, “and we are equipped with arguably the best equipment and chemical instrumentation.” This means that the Puyallup Tribe is way ahead of the cannabis industry when it boils down to new and innovative cannabis science and research.
“It’s a pioneering venture,” Bill Sterud, Puyallup Chairman, stated when asked about The Tribe’s plans. “No one in the U.S. has a cannabis institute, so this could be a place for cannabis science and research and foremost for treating people with good medicine. The lab ties into the project as a quality assurance mechanism to provide standardization.”
