Recently, the media has created talk about the big apples medical marijuana initiative, so much so that major hospitals have made it a point to partake in the fun. Different hospitals have developed partnerships with aspiring marijuana cultivators to achieve a widespread of access to medical marijuana for their patients.
This past Friday was the applicant deadline for licensed medical marijuana cultivators and distributors throughout New York.
Throughout the applicants was North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, a hospital team. The Times Documented “[North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System] had applied for a license in partnership with Silverpeak Apothecary, a medical marijuana company based in Colorado, where marijuana has been legalized for medical and recreational use. A new company, Silverpeak NY, was created for the application.”
Michael Downing, Chief Executive of the North Shore-L.I.J. system, stated he “recognizes the importance of our patients having access to every legal option to manage the symptoms of their illness, if there is clinical evidence to support marijuana’s use for the condition.”
Though hospitals that wish to gain access into the medical marijuana sector commonly do so for research purposes, licensure could offer a patient the ability to obtain marijuana he or she needs in order to treat different conditions the kind of medicine that insurance companies do not cover.
Combining medicinal cannabis with reputable hospital trade groups potentially could launch the marijuana industry into a new world of legitimacy. Observing from the outside looking in, hospitals prescribing cannabis to people suffering from medical conditions could highlight the concept that marijuana is truly fulfilling a medical need, an idea that is mostly undermined in mainstream culture.
