In June of this past year, Rick Scott who is the Governor of Florida signed into law a bill that would permit the legal use of low potency cannabis for medicinal purposes. On Wednesday of this week, Florida will start accepting applications from parties interested in becoming one of five legal regional marijuana cultivation setups in the state.
It will we costly and will not be easy, though. The application fee is $60,063 and Florida’s Department of Health will be accepting applications for only 3 weeks. Individuals submitting applications will also need to have been in the nursery business within the sunshine state continuously for the past 3 decades.
The licenses will permit growers to cultivate and distribute low potency cannabis to a state licensed dispensing organization. The strain, that is known as Charlotte’s Web, is high in cannabidiol, better known as CBD, yet low in THC, the compound that produces a high. The drug potentially can be used in concentrates or vapor form, but cannot be smoked.
The law was given a green light mainly to provide relief for children suffering from severe medical conditions such as epilepsy which impacts an estimated 125,000 Florida children
This past November voters in the sunshine state became victorious against an initiative that would have legalized medical cannabis use in Florida when they failed to reach the 60% affirmative vote that Florida law requires. However, 58% did vote in favor in contrast to the fact that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson ponied up $5.5 million to fund an opposition group. In Florida, voters are approached with the question to approve a full-scale medical marijuana law it is highly likely that it will pass.
