Durango Refuses to Implement Additional Taxes on Marijuana

Mayer of Durango Colorado, Dean Brookie states that the city needs to find a more innovative solution for budgeting issues rather than inappropriately taxing recreational marijuana. This has also been a concern of marijuana investors.
The Durango Herald documented industry representatives who spoke out in the midst of a city council meeting where members of the council were talking about a potential 5 percent tax on cannabis sales.
The tax would have increased close to a million dollars every year to the betterment of city buildings.
Durango Organics co-owner Jonny Radding stated fees and taxes that currently exist have lowered bottom lines to close to nothing.
Animas Herbal and Wellness owner John Menzies points out that in Durango, cannabis sales currently hold a 17.9 % sales tax and 15% excise tax.
Councilors came to the decision not to put the tax to a public vote, where it would most likely get a green light, stating public infrastructure enhancements should not be paid for by one industry.
