French police arrested two Italians on Tuesday after they found cocaine and cannabis in the Vatican librarian’s car.
91-year-old Argentine Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia, is currently bedridden and owns the car. His secretary had trusted the car to the two men who were detained. They were to be getting the car serviced.
The two Italian men had supposedly purchased the drugs in Spain and had been stopped at a toll station near the French Alps in Chambéry. News outlets all reported different amounts but Business Insider reported 4 kilos of cocaine and between 150 and 200 grams of marijuana were found in the car. It is suspected the duo thought the protection of the car’s official license plates would have aided in moving the drugs.
The Holy See has confirmed the car was one of its own but stressed the Italians are not Vatican City citizens and they do not have any affiliation with the Pope or his staff members.
Pope Francis has come down hard on drug usage, calling drug addiction “evil” and repeatedly condemning the legalization of recreational drugs.
