Marijuana users have been termed as unwell, snack-obsessed, fast food lovers. However, contrary to beliefs, a recent study in the Journal of Obesity has proven most of these allegations to be wrong. The study recently conducted compared pot-smokers to people who did not use the drug. As a result, more people who did not use the drug had a higher weight range and were even at a greater risk for marijuana.

The study keened in on 786 Inuit people with an age range of 18 to 74; according to researchers from the Conference of Quebec University, Health Centers discovered that after controlling for the effects of gender and age the body mass index for pot-smokers was 26.8, .2 points higher than the28.6 for those who do not smoke. The group with the lowest BMI had either never used tobacco or had quit using it long ago. In addition, cannabis users had a lower risk of contracting diabetes; results showed that they had lower fasting insulin and insulin resistance.

“In this large cross-sectional adult survey with high prevalence of both substance use and obesity, cannabis use in the past year was associated with lower BMI, lower percentage fat mass, lower fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR (insulin resistance),” according to the authors. “The inverse association observed in our work supports evidence from a larger proportion of previous cross-sectional and follow-up investigations. … As a result, cannabinoids from cannabis may be viewed as an interesting avenue for research on obesity and associated conditions.”

American Journal of Medicine published research in 2013 that showed that marijuana users had lower insulin levels than those who did not use marijuana. The study also suggested that marijuana could play a major part in keeping type 2 diabetes under control. This research will be another argument for marijuana campaigners who advocate the legalization of the drug for medicinal purposes. Even better news for these marijuana campaigners: A recent study proved that there is no link between marijuana use and the development of mental health problems.
