Health officials in Canada do not want to waste any time. They are quickly getting into discussions over how to create a taxed and regulated cannabis market. Earlier last week, as the United States was approaching Thanksgiving, Canada’s Minister of Health, Jane Philpott, reported to CBC News that the Canadian government has already begun working hard to determine the best regulatory model for ending prohibition throughout the entire country.
Yet, certain that “the world is going to be looking to Canada to make sure we do the job well,” Canada’s leading heath officer confesses that there are issues in determining a model that will resolve each concern. She also states that a group of scientists and doctors is currently being put together to help her come to a solution for the issue. Philpott reported that after speaking to her four children openly about recreational marijuana, she is certain that the criminalization model currently controlling Canada is not working. So, her goal, at the moment, is to find the most intelligent way to legalize cannabis rather than trying to persuade Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to change his mind.
“I think if any of your viewers, if they ask their teenage children, they can verify for them that [marijuana] is far too accessible. And obviously they’re issues around safety and concentrations that are available in certain products are very dangerous,” Philpott states. “Often the products are not pure, and that’s something that’s a serious health concern for us.”
Philpott adds that it is way too early to even consider the regulations that will be given to Canadian weed, however, she does suggest that the model will ensure that the product will be put in the hands of adults and it will be more difficult for children to obtain the drug on the black market. It is turning out that Canada is definitely serious about being one of the most progressive countries in the world by trying to fix marijuana policies. Earlier in November, Philpott and some other important figures telling them to get together and figure out the best way to approach this.
“Most thoughtful Canadians recognize that the current system isn’t working and they’re looking to us to make sure we make a wise decision,” she concluded.
