Many millennials – young adults of our time – make up the main chunk of new social and political voters that will soon be voting on the legalization of marijuana in the United States. The newer generation has been described as “tech-savvy, practical, introspective, optimistic and nice.” Not only that but they are also why those who wish to legalize marijuana have the upper hand when creating policies and restrictions for the marijuana industry. Basically, young adults are the reason as to why marijuana may very well become legal in the future by compromising.
Compromising is one of the most important parts of politics in order to spark some type of change. One of the most key factors of compromising, though, is having some type of leverage. At the moment, when looking at legalizing marijuana, the leverage comes from the smokers. That’s a look at the social side; for the political side, it’s more of a concession altering the political landscape rather than a nice gesture. When reviewing proposals for marijuana legalization, the political side should be more thoroughly viewed. In other words, one should not vote for the person who is simply going to legalize the drug, but who is going to offer the support that the marijuana industry needs in order to succeed.
A lot of this can be referred back to the legalization proposal in Ohio that was brought up to voters by a group of investors trying to make a profit off of marijuana cultivation. This what at the expense of the free market and public interest, though. People have the presumption that something is better than nothing, but that is not the case. Bad deals definitely do not outweigh the good deals, especially in an industry where advocates have the leverage. Why would one sell out when they have the power to get what they really want? It seems that the powers lie within the millennials to make their true dreams into realities.
