In a scenario that sounds as if it was straight out of a movie, a warehouse that was disguised as a carpet shop was actually an entry to a massive tunnel built to carry tons of marijuana into the United States. When feds searched the warehouse, they found a yard wide hole in the floor. The hole then continued to expand into of the most sinuous smuggling tunnels ever found.
The tunnel reached 32 feet underground and extended about eight football fields from Tijuana, Mexico to the Otay Mesa neighborhood in San Diego, California. It was filled with electrical lighting, complex ventilation and even a rail system that was used in order to securely transport bunches of marijuana across the border.
After finding the tunnel, police began to pull out bundles of marijuana which equated to 12 tons in the end. That equated to a street value of $6 million and was enough to keep two people high for the rest of their lives. Officials continue to find bundles of marijuana found in the huge tunnel so that number may continue to grow.
As of right now, lots of people assume that the tunnel was built by the Sinaloa cartel, a cartel which is famous for having made complex networks of drug-smuggling tunnels between Mexico and the United States. The cartel’s infamous leader, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán actually escaped from prison during the summer through a tunnel.
“This super tunnel is the tenth large-scale drug tunnel discovered in the San Diego area since 2006, according to the U.S. Attorney,” a San Diego news cooperation stated. “Federal officials have found more than 75 smuggling tunnels in the last five years, most located in California and Arizona.”
