Three groups of bills looking to bring order and overview to the medical marijuana industry in California almost two decades after the state legalized medical marijuana won the signature of Governor Jerry Brown according to his office on Friday. The first Californian statewide licensing and operational rules for marijuana farmers, manufacturers of products with cannabis in it, as well as retail pot shops continue to come as various groups attempt to qualify voter initiatives in 2016 that would let adults use marijuana for recreational purposes.
Prior to Gov. Brown approved of the new set of rules, initiative sponsors began rewriting the measures they had proposed in order to infuse all of the elements that they would hope would prevent the alienation of the governor for the election next year.
“My hope is this will be viewed as a starting point, a solid foundation on which to build from,” stated Assemblyman Ron Bonta, a Democrat from Oakland and lead author of one of the bills, on Friday. “Whatever happens with recreational use, there needs to be proper regulation. This is a very strong contribution from the Legislature about what those regulations should look like.”
The Democratic Governor’s support of the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act has been “hammered out by lawmakers” during the last hours of the legislative meeting. This was all expected since his office made many of the strenuous details.
“This new structure will make sure patients have access to medical marijuana while ensuring a robust tracking system,” Brown closed with. “This sends a clear signal to our federal counterparts that California is implementing robust controls not only on paper but in practice.”
The trio of bills looks to overlook medical marijuana by requiring both individuals and companies involved in any section of the industry to have at least one of seventeen available licenses. In addition, there will be a restriction on how many licenses one company may have.
