Steep Hill Labs is a company based in California; recently, they have opened a lab in Albuquerque that will conduct quality testing for cannabis producers as well as patients partaking in California’s medical marijuana program. In February, California’s Department of Health passed rules that would need cannabis cultivators to have their products tested in approved laws. This requirement has not taken effect, though, but it will as soon as the department decides the approved labs that are capable of meeting needs according to Health Department spokesman Kenny Vigil.
Vigil also noted that Steep Hill is the third lab to receive department approval, the previous being Scepter Labs in Santa Fe and Scientific Base Solution in Albuquerque. CEO David Lampach states that Steep Hill is to test marijuana strands in order to determine potential contaminants as well as chemical properties. Lampach is a former Wall Street trader and also co-founded Steep Hill in Berkeley, California, in 2008. Five years later, Steep Hill merged with Halent Laboratories, another medical marijuana testing lab. Halen Laboratories was co-founded by Donald Land, a chemistry professor from the University of California. The land is now the chief scientific consultant for Steep Hill.
Steep Hill is not solely in California, though. The company has labs in Seattle, Las Vegas, Nev., and Denver. The lab is northwest of Alameda and Jefferson and “will test for mold, bacteria, pesticides and residues of solvents that are used in producing cannabis extracts.” The company will also tests for the potency of THC and CBD to deduct the physiological effects of some strands.
“This kind of testing is necessary, especially for people with medical conditions. If their immune system is depressed, you can’t risk a mold or bacterial infection,” Lampach stated.
