The revenue from tax dollars that comes from the marijuana industry is not just being used to improve infrastructure; it is improving the individual lives of many across the states where it is legalized to some extent.
In 2016, Alaska passed a bill that would effectively give half of its proceeds from the state’s taxes on marijuana to help rehabilitate retreat criminal offenders. This money has as of this year contributed $3 million (projected to double in the coming years), and has helped to reduce crime rates by solving the underlying issues.
With California being one of the leading states in cannabis, as well as legalizing its recreational use as of last year, the plans to send the expected $1.2 billion dollars to the environment will be a huge benefit to the state. The money is subject to go to the Environmental Restoration and Protection Account. The hopes are that this money will be used to help reverse the effects of illicit cannabis cultivation, and help to restore the land that prior to legalization, would damage the surrounding ecosystem.
In the state of Colorado, the new budget has called for the partial use of taxes to be directed to what they call “permanent supportive housing” and general assistance for homeless individuals who are at risk of not having a place to live. Since their was $105 million raked in for the 2016-17 fiscal year, the amount of money dedicated to this should be substantial.
The state of Washington has devoted over 60% of the $730 million in tax revenue, to be divided amidst the states health care programs. These programs such as Medicaid and so on, can use the millions in tax revenue to help the public get the care they need.
with the legalization of marijuana happening across the country, hopefully the tax money can continue to be put to good use.
