It may seem a bit weird that the United State’s most influential labor union would be against the idea of an industry that would surely make thousands of new occupations and make million in revenue, the California Teamsters recently stated that the union does not approve of a ballot measure aimed at legalizing recreational cannabis because it would leave its members out of the process.
The Teamsters union, an association, paying special mind to the wants of truckers and laborers, has given a lot of cash to a campaign against drugs that is attempting to keep cannabis from being legalized in California this November. A new report from the Intercept demonstrates the Teamsters as of late dropped $25,000 into an asset supporting the Coalition for Responsible Drug Policies—the same campaigning force being funded by law enforcement and prison groups throughout all of California.
In any case, not at all like other gatherings planning to attack Sean Parker’s Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA), the union says it is not against the idea of legalizing cannabis in a way that permits grown-ups to buy weed like they would buy alcohol; however it is “philosophically” against the proposition since it doesn’t give a chance to its individuals to handle the transportation and conveyance of marijuana products.
“We favor a highly regulated and tiered model of distribution, similar to the way alcohol is regulated, where there’s an independent distributor that doesn’t grow or sell marijuana,” Barry Broad, a California Teamsters lobbyist said to BuzzFeed. “We could be supportive of an initiative if the regulatory structure was one that we thought appropriate.”
Albeit cannabis proponents typically suggest that cannabis should be managed in the same way that alcohol is managed, the idea of creating an industry such as alcohol is not very popular with the labor unions.
