Arkansas may surprisingly be the first state in the South to legalize marijuana. Although this seems ridiculous and to some even unlikely, cannabis proponents learned this week that their bill looking to legalize marijuana in the state now may be plausible before voters get their vote in November. This week, after turning down a proposed ballot initiative almost ten times, the Arkansas Attorney General, Leslie Rutledge, finally signed the initiative that would allow “cultivation, production, distribution, sale, possession, and use of the cannabis plant and cannabis-related products” recreationally as well as medically.

The Arkansas Cannabis Amendment (ACA), which was proposed by Summit resident Mary Berry, may be one of the most thorough cannabis ballot measures to ever come about over the last twenty years in the United States. That is because instead of isolating a certain portion of cannabis smokers, the initiative looks just to end the state’s prohibition by allowing all adults aged twenty-one or older to use cannabis where they believe it would suit them best.

“It’s going to be treated very similar to alcohol,” Don Lane of Arkansas True Grass said in an interview. “The medicinal people will get what they need, the people who like to sit down and have a beer on the weekends can sit down and have some cannabis on the weekends.”

The proposed ballot initiative indicates that cannabis would be sold throughout Arkansas in retail outlets. Each transaction on recreational cannabis would come with a five percent tax along with the state’s typical 6.5 percent sales tax. The sale of cannabis to patients with a written recommendation from a licensed specialist would not be taxed. The more interesting part about the Arkansas Cannabis Amendment is how devoted it is to home cultivation. Although it seems ridiculous, Arkansas may be the pioneer for legal marijuana in the south.

  1. My name was on the list to help collect signatures for petitions, but I had them take it off because I wasn’t working when I gave it to them, and then I started working. But I am not working, again, and don’t plan on working again. If there’s anything I can do to help with this, just let me know.

However, my interest was peaked because of my nephew that has Dravit Syndrome. He’s been on medical Cannibis for a year now and his seizures are not much better. He got approved in Colorado and is part of a study. He’s 8 years old and has had this since shortly after birth.

  2. That’s that the sucky part if it gets legalized then what happens to the people who are allergic to it? I for one when I walk by some smoking it, I have an allergic reaction my throat starts to swell shut. I’ve had it happen a couple of times. I can’t even go swimming at the river without it happening which is close to where I live. I’ll say it’s ok for medical purposes but to do it just get high is a no go.

  3. ***HEALTH IS NOT AN ISSUE TO JOKE WITH. Marijuana has shown it healing strength, yet difficult to get. We PROJECT that sooner or later, Medical Marijuana will be globally legal.

  5. A lot of people would definitely benefit from medical marijuana and would not have to live their life in constant pain. Like myself, I suffer from chronic pain.
Legalize it, for medical reasons. Give us a life with less or no pain.

  6. I don’t see why it’s so ridiculous, but I live in Arkansas. The vote to get medicinal cannabis legalized lost by only 2 points in 2012, and the main reason for that was the conflicting bills that were vying for the ballot at the same time. If there’s one thing that this state is good at, it’s finding new ways to make money and attract business (hosting huge conglomerates like Walmart, JB Hunt, and Tyson Foods helps), and knowing how close we came last time, I’m sure there will be quite a bit of lobbying on the parts of those companies to help this bill pass. Colorado has proven how lucrative cannabis can be, and now the big money wants in too. However misguided that approach may be, it will nonetheless be a huge step forward for the whole country if a midwestern southern state can legalize it, considering the negative stigma associated with the South, as evidenced in articles such as this.
