Unanimous Veto Decriminalizes Pot in US Virgin Islands

A new pot law was voted into effect in the US Virgin Islands last week. Senate lawmakers voted last Friday 14-0 to override a line item veto from Governor John de Johgh. The decriminalization provision was being included in the 2015 fiscal year budget for the island.

The unanimous override means one ounce or less of cannabis will be decriminalized on the island. The depenalization provision puts an end to jail time for minor marijuana offenses. Those caught with cannabis who are 18 and older will be charged with a civil offense and give a fine between $100 and $200. Those who are under 18 can get a fine and will be mandated to complete a drug awareness program.

Before the new law was voted on, minor marijuana possession was punishable with up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

The sponsor of the bill, Sen. Terrance Nelson said, “The enactment of the new law will go a long way in easing the cost of the judicial system and the judicial process”.

The US Territory of Guam is the only other territory to make some changes to cannabis laws. They legalized medical cannabis in November
