When three grandma’s agreed to trying pot for the first time on camera, they had no idea it would be an overnight internet sensation. Cut.com filmed the video and posted it on YouTube on Nov. 19th. Since then the video three stoned seniors has gotten more than 16 million views.
“I thought it would be buried deep in the Internet and no one would find it,” said Dorothea, the grandma in the middle. “I mean, who searches for videos with grandmas? Guess I was wrong. Every day the number of views just goes up, CRAZY! My friends keep sending me emails from people that had seen it whom I never met. I can’t stop shaking my head.”
Dorothea says she has gotten nothing but support from her family, especially her five grandchildren, two of which are teenagers. She said her children are very excited for her, and even a bit proud. She didn’t think that anyone would see that video, but with grandchildren that are on social media all the time, it didn’t take long for it to be found. Her family keeps her up to date on how “viral” her video has gone.
The grandma’s agree, they are glad they tried marijuana, at least once. They say it will now give them a new perspective when talking about marijuana with others. Dorothea didn’t think she would try marijuana again, but understands the fight to legalize it better, and thinks it should be decriminalized for adult use.
The granny on the left did tell producers after the taping that she would give smoking another try.
The producers of the show said it was actually a challenge in Seattle to find grandma’s who hadn’t ever smoked. “First we asked all of our grandmas,” Gaston said, referring to the production crew. “Turns out they all had smoked weed. Then we asked all our friends’ grandmas. They, too, had smoked weed. After we had gone about six degrees down, we realized everyone’s grandma had smoked weed.”
