Medical marijuana bill survives narrow vote

Utah is another step closer to legalizing cannabis for medical practices.

The medical cannabis bill was sent through to a third Senate reading Tuesday night by a slim 16-13 vote.

The bill reading created some heated conversation on both sides.

The bill would allow access for individuals in Utah with qualifying illnesses to have the advantage to use medical marijuana in edible or liquid state, and builds licensed dispensaries to sell it.

Senators in favor say they reached their decision based on the discovery of hearing input from their constituents, and some shared personal stories and experiences involving medical cannabis. Those in opposition to the bill wanted further clarity on the process of how this bill has moved through the Legislature, whether anyone has had ample time to fully comprehend the ramifications should the bill go through, and the influence among the other states with similar medical cannabis bills.

“This bill was kept secret, it was hidden from the public, from all of the agencies — none of the departments,” stated Senator. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross. “ I talked to DOPL today, they never saw this bill until Wednesday, last week.”

Christine Stenquist, a advocate of medical cannabis, made her way to our nations Capitol earlier in the week for the vote.

“We’re just really proud of our lawmakers right now that they’re showing such thoughtful compassion towards… Towards those that are suffering and we’re very hopeful, we’re very hopeful,” she stated.

There was a lot excitement from supporters of medical marijuana. They celebrated and applauded as the vote passed Tuesday evening.

S-B 259 will be presented to the Senate for a third review .

When that moment emerges, it will either be voted through to the House, or it will be terminated if votes don’t meet the required amount to pass.
