A nonprofit organization that is connected to Ohio State University microbiologist is planning to make a $24 million medical marijuana program if pot legalization is voted for November 3rd. Michael Ibba is the chairman of the OSU Microbiology Department as well as the Molecular Biochemistry Training Program. In addition to this, he has recently been added to the board of the new International Cannabinoid Institute Research Foundation – a group of researchers composed of medical, technological, and engineering experts that are committed to develop medicine made from medical marijuana.

In March, it was reported that at the University of Cincinnati and at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, researchers are looking to figure out to what extent medicinal marijuana helps stop seizures in those suffering from epilepsy. Issue 3 would give medical marijuana to those suffering from the following: cancer, Alzheimer’s, post-traumatic stress disorder or other chronic illnesses. ResponsibleOhio is the political action committee advocating the legalization of marijuana. On Tuesday, the group launched a commercial throughout the state speaking of the benefits of medical marijuana.

The large medical marijuana research center may be built on the land of Dr. Suresh Gupta, a ResponsibleOhio investor who is in turn allowed to operate a tenth of the pot farms in the state given that Issue 3 is approved. Already, 12 donors have stated that they would pay for the research center’s construction costs.

“We’re excited for ICI’s announcement and what it means for the future of medical marijuana in Ohio and across the nation,” said Ian James, executive director of ResponsibleOhio. “There are far too many Ohioans suffering from conditions that could be alleviated by medical marijuana. This innovation is exactly what we envisioned when Issue 3 was drafted.”
